Jens Askilson was born October 15,
1853 at Matre,
Hordaland, Norway. His wife to be, Gunhild Hansdatter Fjellhaugen
Opstvedt, was born May 27, 1857 at Skånevik, Holmedal, Norway. The
couple was married in March, 1877 and sailed to America in May,
1877. James used several name spellings until he settled on Oscarson
in about 1898. Askilsen, Askildsen, Oskerson, and Oscerson are all seen in
various records throughout his life.
After first living in
Newark, Illinois
and Clinton County, Iowa, they homesteaded in
Lake Preston, Kingsbury County,
South Dakota in the 1880. The family
eventually moved to Richland County, North Dakota and settled in the
area of Colfax, Galchutt, and Abercrombie.
